What started as a love letter inspired by the mesmerizing wave and ripple designs of Mori Yuzan’s Hamonshū took on a life of its own. In the beginning, the three-volume book from the early 1900s served as the blueprint for my creative coding project, and now it’s a daily and personal exploration.

I use p5.js and Processing to create digital art that reflects the fluid beauty of Yuzan’s motifs, blending the organic with the technological. This process allows my work to evolve in unexpected and captivating ways.

Incorporating AI, 3D, Photoshop, and Illustrator, I reinterpret these traditional designs with a contemporary flair. This project is deeply personal, as it also honors my mother, a talented painter and seamstress. The floral and textile patterns in my work are inspired by the vibrant fashion world I grew up in, surrounded by her creativity and artistic vision.

This collection is a seamlessly blending of nostalgia, intrigue, beauty, and the ever-shifting nature of movement.

Rings was originally created in 2023, and it was the first sketch from the Wave Design A collection. It was made with Processing and with the help of Photoshop. The magic is all in the post-processing. It is a modern take on the traditional style and became my obsession. Looking through the volumes, I was struck by how simple and elegant everything was laid out. I wanted the design aesthetics of waves and ripples to be the biggest part of my pieces.

The indigo color is a tribute to the cover, and if you look carefully, it has the same vibe. This was all done with Processing code. This was the first sketch that captured the essence of Hamonshū and it became the blueprint for all the other pieces in the collection.

I grew up reading graphic novels and comic books, so it was important that I incorporate them into the collection. One way to describe this collection is that it’s a comic book and a story without words.

What started as a homage to Mori Yuzan’s volumes turned into something that took on its own life. Every day, I would study the designs and absorb their powerful minimalism. Originally, the plan was to create a generative art project with p5.js and Processing, but curiosity and exploration turned it into a different kind of creation.

As I was developing the algorithm, I couldn’t help but think about the impact of my daughter on my life. The ripples became symbols of how she changed me as a person, and that’s when I started to add flowers. This collection is a celebration of the meeting of tradition and innovation, where each piece weaves together stories of nature, art, and family.

The flowers in my work stand for the resilience we all need to push through tough times. Each petal woven into the waves and ripples is a reminder that beauty can still emerge when life gets rough. They contrast with the movement of the waves, highlighting our basic human drive to keep going no matter what. It’s about finding something worthwhile even when the going gets tough.

Through my art, I try to show how we all deal with these contrasts. I hope when people see my work, they can see a bit of their own stories in it, acknowledging both the struggles and the bits of beauty along the way. I want you to remember my work as an escape.
